Man I have to say the whole weight lifting thing +the pencil flutter deal thingy from your vid definitintly has peaked my curiosity as far as picking goes...the only thing that I am wondering before I will become dead-sold on this style of picking "Sarod" is how useful it it when applied to non tremello type picking situations...say like when you dont want to be picking the same tone more than once before you play the next tone...is this type of picking purely for tremello note sequences...or if you wanted to shoot up & down a scale w/o hitting any note more than once before moving on to the next...Can this style of picking be effective for that??? Also what about picking w/ regard to tuplet hop-scotching??? Is Sarod like non-rhythmic tremello picking....or can it be used (after great amounts of practice, of course) to say...hop scotch each beat btw/ say...tuplets of 8 & 9?

yES!!!!
Delta thats it....the movement morphs as your speed increases!
I counted three transitions in my technique....one for slower speeds say...below60bpm...more scalpel....wider sarod movement
one for middle speeds say.....60-180bpm....less scalpel...tighter sarod movement(the "marker" notes come into play)
and one for higher speeds 180 plus...Full on tight flutter with sarod and the "marker" notes ARE in place. The scalpel technique is now
sort of placement technique which moves the pick to the next string. This is what allows the alternate picking to continue.

i am way glad you see that!

Its different from one person to the next.....

Have you tried it with scale sequences????

I love the song Pebber. Is it available as a downloadable purchase? I checked your website and iTunes and found nothing. Also, congratulation on your degree.

Pebber would never say it himself, but he is a virtuoso of the highest order. He has many live performance videos on his youtube channel as well as studio tracks that you can check out.

This stuff is great, eh? Actually, I think Pebber is quite unique. He definitely does have influences but he seems to have his own voice. This one is more McLaughlin-like. And I can also go on and say its more Beck, Page, etc. But at the same time isn't. Pebber! release a studio album!! :D

Soviet Lounge was a bad bunch of tracks recorded at Scott Fineberg's place back in 1997-98. I wouldnt really call it a recording! More like a headache!

as some1 mentioned the pick tends to bounce off when sarod picking till you get the hang of it. it's weird how different styles picking techniques feel on hand isn't it. i never knew there was so much in things in guitar playing. i wonder how many picking different styles there are

Hi ashan,

I too have noticed that changing between the strings when doing sarod is quite tricky - thanks for bringing this issue to light. I just got Pebber's vol 2 and 3 DVDs. I hope to see if he addresses it there. I can do it but I have to slow things down. It's almost like you are taking a huge leap when you change strings... from stairs to canyons. Whereas, with the scalpel, its much easier.

The use of "marker" notes helps with that......

Its in one of the previous Sarod videos.

i thought. that was for changing strings within a long phrase that involve many strings. so this apply to open string practicing too?
