In a lot of metal stuff they like to use the b5 (Blues scale) also add chromatic notes inbetween the scales. And in the minor scale try adding a major 3rd sounds pretty cool, also symmetrical scales and diminished.

I suggest to watch Pebber module 1 videos on YouTube and really dig them. Then once you got your picking sorted go on to module 2.

I'd say you need to loosen up your picking hand and use more of your wrist when picking not your arm.

Thanks for all the tips guys! Am going to the hard rock hotel for like 5 nights and you can rent a guitar for free! also I'll go to some music stores. thanks for the metronome tip Farelli also can't wait for them videos, also I got a 9 hour flight so I can catch up on some theory:)
