I understand what Adam is saying...but if we were in the Key of F#, and we wanted to play the Mixolydian scale, wouldn't it be written as

C# D# E# F# G# A# B# C#

F# to F# in the key of F# (as Adam has written it) is F# Ionian.

To me anyway.

Look at Adam's post... he wrote:

F#-G#-A#-B-C#-D#-E

Not all sharps...

So F# Mixo is in the key of B Major

ha of course. i play every day. not as much as i used to, but still every day. my dexterity has gone through the roof after practicing PBs scaletone stuff, i really like the 3/4 and 4/3 maps, those slides are great for your pinky. however, the problem does not lie in my coordination, or in how clean i play, it lies in me actually being able to come up with anything other than really simple, cliche melodies. where does the good shit come from? i play mostly blues and it seems like ill get off to a good start, then just dive bomb. how do you keep that plane in the air?

thanks

Am I in fucking OUTER SPACE?

Just PLEASE,,,,LET PEBBER answer my question.

Maybe I set a bad example by trying to participate in every Topic,,,and I take full responsibility,,,but seriously,,,if one of Pebber's STUDENTS asks him a question,,,I think it best to let HIM answer it.

Reading all this back & forth stuff will ONLY CONFUSE ME MORE.

THANK YOU.

YES!

and my question to Pebber is:

How would I write the F# Mixolydian SCALE? F#, G#, A#, B, C#, D#, E ?

I am not interested in the "key." In fact, I am asking regarding this week's "Educational Interpretations" Backing Track, "F# Minor In 7/4 Time." I am writing out some F# Mixolydian licks (as suggested by the Author of the piece), and I FIRST want to write the notes of the F# Mixolydian scale,,,PROPERLY.

I appreciate the help, but it confused things more. I am NOT trying to be an asshole. I just thought, that by addressing my question directly to Pebber, we would avoid the peripheral stuff altogether.

I don't think we NEED Pebber to answer that...

So risking a shotgun wound from Adam (possibly on the face), here's my answer:

Mixolydian is built on the fifth degree of a major scale so the ONLY major scale that has an F# as a fifth degree is B so you'd take your alterations from that "parental" key (5 sharps in this case) so it looks like this:

F#, G#, A#, B, C#, D#, E

and if you want to make sure it's really a mixolydian scale just remember its formula and compare it to F# major like so:

Major:
F# G# A# B C# D# E#
1__2__3__4__5__6__7

Mixolydian:
F# G# A# B C# D# E
1__2__3__4_5__6__b7

I'm assuming you know the order of modes and how major keys are built.

Hope it helps

Now back to my Wes Montgomery transcription and analisys...

AAhhh goodt...I like this

This is what has haunted me for frickin ever!! Think its all correct...but I dont think we are answering Adams question....

I believe he asked is this:Mixolydian...F# G# A# B C# D# E F#
the correct way to write it?

Instead of using flats....:Gb__Ab__Bb_B__Db__Eb_E__Gb

I thought his question was more of a formality question than a...how to.....NO?

I just call it Pebbers 9th and 10th patterns...:)

If you wanted to write it using flats you'll call it Gb Mixolydian, sharps or flats only on diatonic scales, so no F# Ab for ex, plus you've got to keep the order (A B C D E F G).

Then you'd have something like this:
Gb Ab Bb Cb Db Eb Fb <= Looks weird doesn't it?

But if you think for a moment, G Mixolydian is all naturals so down a half-step (Gb Mixolydian) would make everything go down a half-step.

Adam...

Pebber should be in finals right now so I dont think he has the time.
plus...
I think he wants US to collaberate until he can have more time to give.

I would like to apologize to Adam as I had just gotten up, read this, misread some things in it, saw some people asking about different keys and such...

People like to make shit WAY more complicated than it is and, as Pebber would say, guitar players never know shit about theory.

So, just to clear this up:

Adam, F# Mixolydian has an E natural and B natural. The rest of the notes are sharped and this is how I would write it both ascending and descending. I would not write flats when descending.

But, I'm sure 5 minutes from now someone will come along and tell you I'm wrong...so, hold on tight.

I always go back to the Scaletone Forms. Mixolydian is 1 2 3 4 5 6 b7 1 so you can transpose the scaletones to any key.
F# Mixolydian would be F# G# A# B C# D# E F#. Corrected thanks Rob.

If you want more tonal variety in Mixolydian - use Mixolydian #4 (or Lydian b7) instead and/or both simultaneously.

If you guys address questions directly to me I cant guarantee I will be online right away - To make it more clear I put these forums up because I dont sit at the computer all day long to answer questions from the public. You guys must understand that since I was Buckethead's teacher I get hundreds of emails a month asking all sorts of stupid retard questions in addition to actual valid thoughtful questions on scales and technique and theory and such.

I just cant answer everyone all day long - so if someone puts question up in the forums then I think it's fair to reply to it - I cant get to the questions right away myself so rather than make everyone wait and wait for an answer I created the forums so people could bounce things off one another.

Adam has my email and my phone number - if he really wants a completely private custom answer without anyone else inputting their thoughts he should know that he can ALWAYS just email me or call or text me on my cell phone - all my numbers are posted on my website under contact info.

The thing is - once you put a question out in the open on a forum I believe its fair game (unless some schmohawk clown starts spewing all kinds of incorrrect information and acting like they are an authority like someone did recently and I had to slam on them - If you ask me a question openly on the forum then I expect everyone to be able to add their thoughs before I can get to it - I can either reinforce what they are saying or blast them if they are all screwed up! - If someone starts putting up some way off shit thats not correct or maybe slightly correct but written in a very confusing manner I will also definitely knock it down - also if someone comes across like they are a know-it-all teacher and they start spewing some confusing info with the wrong attitude then I will also knock it down.
Fair enough?

Adam? WE all have to get used to him. His personality is specifically why I like him. Its like Martin Sheen and Mark Wahlberg in "The Departed" - Adam is my equivalent of DIGNAM (Marky mark's character) Just forget about it tomorrows a new day. You'll see.
No worries.

Andy,
The person of whom you speak took guitar lessons from Pebber for over 10 years on a fairly regular basis.
As you can see this forum isn't for those type of questions however.
