I am unable to play a C chord

No matter how hard I try I mute the first string with my first finger of my left hand. Is this common? Is this a sign to not move forward with guitar? I'm an old guy btw, 39 years old and just purchased a cheap Chinese guitar 4 weeks ago. Thanks for reading.

No all 39 year old beginners cant play C chords. BUT - in about 3 weeks time you will be able to. The whole trick?
Dont give up and dont quit. Just keep at it until it works. It takes a LOT of work and a LOT of time to play.
