Don't know the answer to your question though. Was not aware he was tuned to G. I do know that he used to at least tune down to D. Probably still does.

I'm not sure the exact height of my string action but it's fairly high and I use light gauge strings with the high E a 10.

I like the sound and feel of a guitar tuned down a half step but I still want to build my chops in regular tuning. It hasn't been too much of a problem. After a couple of days it heals itself and hopefully the skin will get stronger and less likely to recur. I know Hendrix and SRV tuned down a half step but I suspect it was more for the sound then a split-nail consideration. And I'm not ready for Krazy-Glue!

Thanks for the feedback Farelli,I'm going to try bending down more when possible. Do you think that keeping your nails very short strengthens the skin underneath?

Thanks Pebber. And thanks a billion for the generous cornucopia of free information on technique!!. I have only started a few weeks ago with your material, mostly the chromatic scale exercises and have already noticed a tangible improvement in my playing. This is after only scratching the surface of what you have gifted the world guitar community with. And just so you know I'm not a mooch I have also recently ordered four of your DVDs on picking techniques. Thanks for the feedback!

The power of concentration is a mighty thing for sure. I went through a splurge of figuring out note for note lots of solos but instead of completely mastering one at a time I would then lustfully move on to learning another and another( which in and of itself is a fun addiction/obsession). I had to put the breaks on and now must go back and really get them under my fingers. This I love as well but want to integrate this into a comprehensive format so I'm not lagging behind in any one area...
