  • High School/College Level Music ClassesDateSun Jul 11, 2010 8:22 pm

    Hello everyone,

I'm 14 and going to be a freshman in high school next year, and I'm going to be in the string orchestra as a string bassist, and Jazz Lab (which is a small all instruments included class covering, you guessed it, basic jazz techniques) as a guitarist. Freshmen can't take Music Theory, but I'm certainly going to take it the last 3 years of high school. My question is a) can anyone give me an idea of what will be covered and b) is there anything I can actively prepare for now? I'm taking a slew of other tough classes (including Accelerated Algebra, AP English, and French), so any leg up on music classes I can get is golden. Also, I'd be grateful if anyone can give me similar answers regarding college level courses. I'm planning on entering college as a guitarist. Oh, and to anybody who has taken high school music classes: what does it take to get into AP courses? I wanna get as much under my belt as possible before college.

    Thanks and much love,
    Robert

    Here's my 2 cents:

If your looking to learn music theory, I highly recommend Theory and Harmony by Keith Wyatt and Carl Schroeder. I've just begun working with it to learn more advanced harmonic theory, and it's just great. It'll take you from 0 to advanced, but you gotta put in the effort. It's a workbook, and trust me when I say that it's worth doing every exercise if you want to learn the material.

Also, make sure to apply what you learn immediately. It might seem like an obvious point, but it took me 2 years to finally make the connection between a scale and a solo.

Thanks for the info. I've been trying to get into more complex harmony (more than major/minor scales and Dominant 7th chords), and this is a nice addition to my bag of tricks. I'm interested to see how this sounds when you do it with extended/altered chords.

    Thanks again!

    Hello,
I'm going to be a freshman in high school next year, and have been playing guitar for 3.5 years. I'm looking into going to coolege for music, and I've heard that Berklee's guitar department uses drop 2 and 3 voicings. I can't find a whole lot of info on it, so if someone could direct me to a book, video, article etc., that would be awesome.

    Thank you!
