Going through this thread form the beginning you can see the improvement in your hand mobility and coordination. (I wish mine was progressing as quickly as yours! I still have difficulty in keeping my little finger curled in when not in use & doing the 1,3/2,4 spider exercise!)
I can't comment on your technique as I am further behind you in this learning process, but I would say that you are the most regular contributor on the forum (since I joined) and I find it most encouraging to see. I have yet to be comfortable recording myself playing, whenever I do I make mistakes which I don't make when not recording, it is most frustrating!

I was 6 ft away from where his pedal board was and directly in front of the 50W Marshall Amps he is using on this tour.
One of my reasons for posting this is that I've read that RT has his Guitars drop tuned to G. Does this mean that the E string is tuned down 9 half steps so all six strings would be: G C F Bb D G, or is it that the E string is tuned up 3 half steps so that all six strings would be: G C F A# D G ?
Also is tuning in this way is going to make chords and scales different to play? I'm sure that there is going to be some of the later theory packages that will cover this but I am still only at the 101 theory pt 2A, for the 3rd month as Pebber has been sending out more that my quota I never thought I be interested in Music Theory and so far it's been very easy to grasp providing you follow the rules!
I'm also using the Deva Grip Tip picks, Yellow, red and gel, can't decide which I prefer! I would also agree that they are easier to hold than other makes, I find that a standard pick slips around in between my thumb and finger when doing scalpel picking after a bit, its doesn't with the Deva ones.
This from a beginner still trying to keep time when doing the basic right hand exercises, so I'm not sure my recommendation is worth that much!
I am on a couple of astronomy forums and they have a minimum number of posts before you can post a link to another place. uploading images is all right in them. I supposed that it was the same here, in that you can upload a YouTube video of your practice for feedback. Which reminds me that I need to record some of my playing this week to see what yo all think

Thanks for the information, you are right I did try to upload all in one go, never thought of the data limit! I try it again, although mine don't look as neat as yours, I couldn't be bothered with having to try and add them to the original pdf, too much stopping and starting. It was much quicker by hand but legibility is the down side

Also I don't understand why the 1,3,5 scaletone doesn't link up to the CAGED chord format in the Minor scale (I haven't had the lesson from Pebber for this yet, so I'm getting ahead of things). That said, is this because a different set of scaletones are used or that the 1,3,5 depicts chords I don't know yet?

I've been doing shed loads of theory stuff on scales, etc. I think I've got the hang of it up to now and have some 150 pages so far. I then thought what if I'm doing all this wrong? So I have scanned about 50 pages so that I can have it 'marked' and corrected as necessary by those of you who know your theory. However, I can't get them to upload into an accessible file on here. I'm sure it's straightforward enough once you've been told how to like the video's
I thought they all looked pretty good, but I am a complete novice and possibly the worst student on the forum, so my praise is sincere without any knowledge to back it up.
I would also add that when I can play scales that easily I will feel like I've accomplished something
Yes the spider 1324 is very hard, it takes all my concentration to get the ring finger to move without lifting the second! I also have greater difficulty moving from bottom E string to top E direction, I cant lift my ring finger high enough and move it towards my hand. That said I couldn't do it at all 2 months ago, so there is progress, even if a snail could move quicker!
As for the guitar, it belongs to my son, he had it for Christmas. I saw it on ebay being sold a few miles away, collection only and cost £30 plus £5 petrol. Came with a mini portable amp which will run on a 9V battery on on mains with a 9V transformer plug, so all in all a very good deal.
The only problem with it is a fret buzz on the D string 8th fret, increasing the string hight didn't make any difference. It is not too much of an issue, particularly for my son, as he is learning in a different way at school. So will wait until I finish my guitar, I have all the parts all I have to do is work out the wiring so that I can get any pick up combination I want.
Okay here is about 11½ minutes of ladder exercises mistake and all, at 80 beats per minute:
I know ring and little finger need work, that my little finger sticks out from time to time, I do try and keep it curled in when not in use plus lots more.
It's quite boring watching it all through, so I apologise in advance if you didn't skip parts!
I went through the fist 15 minutes of the MODULE 1 PRACTICAL Part 1 this afternoon with the guitar pugged into the amp and played along until it was too fast for me to keep up with the left hand, I could keep going on open strings beyond the 15 minutes but it doesn't sound very nice! After repeating the first 15 minutes 3 times I set up the camera and tried videoing the exercise! some 2 hour later the above is the best there is to offer
I am having major problems with the muting of the high E and B string as the volume control gets in the way, I'm sure there is a simple way around this but I haven't worked it out yet. On the video it doesn't look like I am picking correctly even though I am using the scalpel technique.
When it comes to the left hand, the fastest I can play the A minor is about 100 beats per minute, I've been practising the ladder and spider techniques the former with more success than the latter, although I have seen improvement in the control of my ring finger (which wouldn't do anything a month ago). Part of the problem may be due to the various injuries my hand has suffered over the past 50 odd years!
I think I will have to produce more for my video for Pebber at the end of the month but I seem to loose all coordination once I hit the record button, does anyone have any tips on how to record oneself as if it was just a normal practice?

Having watched it through again I thought I edited the end out, my apologies! I also note that even with a metronome, I still have a timing issue
I think it is the palm muting that is needed, I went through the right hand picking exercises last night (unplugged) and I noticed that there was an element of string sound from unpicked strings, which went when I muted them. The problem now is working out how to mute the unpicked strings without muting the picked string, which is what I was doing too much last night.
I attempted to make a video of what I've learnt since the 1st January when I enrolled in a 1 video lesson a month with Pebber.
I have been prcticing on my sons strat copy unplugged and thought I was doing okay, however when I plugged it in to the amp and started the right hand exercises, alternating up and down the strings the sustain became too much and I had to damp the strings with my left hand to hear the picked strings clearly. On all the lesson videos this doesn't happen with Pebber and looking at posted videos on the forum the same is true. As I'm totally new to this I really have no idea how to do this, I tied damping the struck string with the side of my right hand but then it deadened the next picked string, particularly when going from high E (string 1) to low E (string 6).
Can someone explain what I am doing wrong, is it how the guitar is set up, the amp or incorrect use of the picking hand? Cheers in advance.
I'm still working through the Major scale theory ~ All new to me Also the 1st right hand exercises ~ can do the right hand bit but having trouble with keeping the left hand up on the A minor pentatonic. Then I am also trying to learn the C major patterns, got the 1st & 2nd but haven't got the 3rd position stuck in my old head yet. Thinking of biting the bullet and posting a video in the next day or 2 ~ should be good for a laugh

Here is a brief introduction along with what I'm doing guitar wise at the moment. I am 52 years old (53 in 13 days), I live in North Wales (UK), am currently unemployed (have a long-standing lower back problem) but am looking for work. I am separated from my wife, although we still live in the same house and have a 12 year old son. I have been a member of the forum for a few weeks now and I have just subscribed to Pebber's on-line tuition (1 video a month to start with). I am a complete novice, I've been following Pebber's free YouTube lessons for about 2 months and am making some progress but I'm sure it will be a long time before I can play anything! What started me off was my 12 year old taking guitar lessons at school and needing a guitar, as I wanted to learn at his age but wasn't allowed, I finally began 40 years later!
I am struggling with some aspects of the left hand control/action, due I expect to various injuries that hand has sustained over the years but I suspect that I'm lucky in not having learned any bad habits. I find the right hand to be fairly easy in comparison, I can do the scalpel picking exercises without having to keep looking where my had is (which I'm pleased with).
The Guitar I have is a Stratocaster type with SSH pick ups which I have built myself from a second hand body, neck and imported Chinese pick ups & wiring. The latter in hindsight was a mistake as the volume pot is playing up! I've decided to replace the pick ups with 2 Artec Black HOT RAIL SINGLE COIL HUMBUCKER's and in the humbucker slot a Warman G-rail triple coil pickup, 6 wire output. with the wiring to give every combination of set up including all on. I'm not sure what the final effect will be but it'll be fun building it.
In the mean time I can use my Son Strat copy for the videos for my lessons.
I am looking forward to posting my first video and taj=king part in the discussions here, once I know what I should video.
