Hey Pebber,

Wondering if you can help me. I'm watching your video 'Music Theory Workshop 11-18-12',

About 18mins in you describe how all the notes of a Major scale fit and which tones want to move to what notes and which are the stable tones. (1 and 3 are stable, 2-6 float, 4 wants to go down to 3 etc...)

What are the characteristics of the other 5 chromatic notes not in Major scale be?

Is it similar for Natural minor, Harmonic minor etc?

Is this similar to what is taught in Dick Grove's ear training courses?

Cheers mate,

Nathan

Stability/instability depends on harmonic context (not the individual note considerations in a vaccum)...A "C" is going to emote differently over a A minor chord then it will over a C Major Chord even though its still the same note in each case. Regarding the other 5 chromatic scale notes that our 7 note major scale leaves out....The simplest way to explain how they are related to our major scale is that they each one of them happens to either be a leading tone to one of our Major scales 5 closely related keys aka Key of ii,iii,IV,V,vi

note* there is one odd ducking in the bunch Which is the minor 7th above our major scales tonic.

that guy does not correspond to the Ti of a closely related key but rather, it coresponds to a note that within +/- one accidental on our order of sharps/flats which is a C major context would refer to the Bb that is in the keysignature of our Key of IV ala F major.
