Hi, my name is Sean. I'm a new subscriber to online lessons and new to the forum. I've been learning guitar for about 3 years now, started with self teaching using justinguitar and whatever other online lessons I could find. I have picked up my guitar every day to practice and jam for as many hours as I can in that three years time, I just can't put it down. After about a year of self-teaching I started taking private lessons from a local player here in Baltimore for almost a year. My main reasons for in person lessons were to eliminate any bad habits I was forming and to improve on technique. Unfortunately my teacher had no plan. He's a good player but he'd just teach random stuff every lesson, he wouldn't even know what we were working on in the previous lesson. He just wanted to teach me tunes. The one thing he did help with was some theory stuff I was having trouble understanding.
Well I just happened to come across Pebber's name somewhere on Reddit so I looked him up and started watching a few vids. This is exactly what I was looking for so I immediately singed up. I am blown away by the depth of material Pebber has on offer here. I'm just starting to look at more material and have started with picking exercises and some left hand stuff. It's amazing because I already knew I sucked badly but after just trying some of the simple exercises I realized I sucked way worse than I thought. Just doing the spider exercises makes me see how retarded and weak my fretting hand is, I feel like an infant trying to become a beginner. Well, I'm really stoked about what I'm seeing here and I can't wait to improve my technique as is so desperately needed. Once I get my mind wrapped around the first modules I will post some technique vids to make sure I'm doing them correctly. Sorry for the rambling, just wanted to say hello! :) And I thank Pebber for waking my ass up to how bad I am! Peace!
Hi, welcome to this board. I'm also new but with way less experience! You will surely have a much easier time getting Pebbers Lessons right with your 3 years of experience so don't look so negative at your skills on the guitar :)
Good luck with the practicing, i'm looking foward to see your playing and maybe learn a few things from watching you doing some excercises!
Welcome Disruptor and Zvono. I would suggest watching "What to practice" in PB's videos. Work slow, work hard today and live for tomorrow. Because tomorrow is when you will see an increment of improvement. These increments add up over weeks and months to large steps of improvement. Sometimes things click in the moment but not often. Time after time, things I couldn't do yesterday, I can do today. I hope this helps.
Talk it then walk it.
Welcome, Disruptor. Heyman's comments are spot-on.
And don't ever worry about sucking at guitar. We all suck. We all make posts about what we suck at and how we learned a new way to not suck, or to ask for help figuring out how to not suck.
We also make videos of ourselves sucking. It's funny for me to watch my old videos, but it's also cool because I can see how much I've improved in the last 2 years, even after playing guitar for more than 25 years.
You'll find that no one here will ever criticize you except constructively. That is, Pebber might say "Your pinky finger is weakling!! Do spider and x-pattern exercises for months!!"
And he'd be right, for me. :)
Hi disruptor, and Welcome to the Forum! I'm an administrator here, and it's very exciting to read your story, because it's pretty similar to all of here, in one way or another!
I played (poorly, as it turns out) for 20 YEARS before I discovered Pebber on YouTube! He's since become one of my closest friends, and of course, my Guitar Guru!!
Suggestion for your videos: PLEASE post videos that are no longer than 3 minutes and showcasing as few exercises as possible. It's better to post these, as opposed to a 20-minute video that shows you switching exercises every 30 seconds. My first video to Pebber was over 10 minutes -- LOL!!!
This will allow others, especially myself and Pebber, to view them quicker. Pebber is FLOODED with literally hundreds of videos each month, and I'll handle whatever he sends my way. Just keep them short and sweet,,,and yes, we ALL suck at something guitar-related, especially including myself. Otherwise, we would not be here!
I love Justinguitar...GREAT guy and GREAT guitarist!
OK, well, you're off to the races...See you soon, disruptor!!!
Quote: disruptor wrote in post #8Actually, he didn't say a word about it,,,BUT that was just before he started pursuing his Doctorate and his time became even that much more limited. I didn't really get an "appreciation" of the quantity of videos he gets each month, until I started helping him with the overflow.
LOL about the 10 min vid. I'm sure Pebber had some choice words about that. :)
I just reviewed some over the weekend that were PERFECT in terms of length-of-video-time AND distribution of exercises. If I had permission to post them here, I would, but that's a no-no. I've repeatedly ask 2 of the students to PLEASE upload here in the Forum, but we'll see.
Anyway, just go with the flow, and do NOT be all caught up in anything other than doing YOUR thing! I love checking out others' vids, because I will often play/practice along! Remember disruptor, we are all here to help and support each other, so don't be afraid to ask questions and dive right in!
