If you dontknow the CAGED system yet start there! And after that go to 7 or more positions.

The use of these positions is that you will know to play the scales anywhere on the neck. As well that you will learn to play the 7 modes at the same time.

Learn one thing at a time if you want to know the circle of fiths first try to remember the circle. Write them several 100s times down. Than play thru it, e.g. C,G,D,A,E etc do that in Major first.

I hope these answers will help you, feel free to ask if its not clear. I'm sure there are more people who can tell you the benefits of these positions.

Yes everybody should. As Pebber says "learn them in all 15 keys"

That will take a while but you should!

Hello Stephanie,

I suggest you get Pebbers free pdf. of the chromatic scale exercises utilizing all the finger permutations up and down the neck in every position. He also has a free video demonstrating many of these. They are great for teaching right and left hand coordination as well as training your fretting hand with all the different combinations of fingering.

And yes, huge thanks to PB!!

Whatever system you use, the scaletones on a single string will allways be the same.
so never underestimate how much playing up and down single strings will help. then on to two strings and so on
the book, the advancing guitarist. explains it pretty well.

Also Pebber shows the steps to learning this shit starting with incremental, I wrote it in the forum somewhere.
lots of work but so fun

All the greats mention that playing scales on one sting is very important. I was watching this week an instruction video from Al DiMeola (see Youtube Al DiMeola REH) and he is saying the same thing. And shows how to improv on it with a vamp. Very nice stuff.

Hi
When it comes to ear training the sooner you start the better, singing around the circle of fifths and scales is a good way to start it.
