so im sure some of you are probably like 'how can you be new to this stuff and not new to guitar"? well, ive honestly been fiddling around with the guitar for 12 years and just now decided its about time to take it serious. for the past week or so ive been looking for scales to learn. i didn't realize the different keys and modes and all that other stuff. what is the best scale to learn and what key is it in?

12 years and you dont know a single scale?
Lets assume you said please..
If you are gonna take it "serious" search around on pebbers page, all the scales are there..
I suggest you start by learning the major scale, but there is actually no pre given order, follow your ears.

Ill quote Satriani:
Once you learn all the things there are to learn about the theory of music, you realize that everything’s equal: Nothing is more important than the next thing. No chords are more important than each other and all scales are equal. Because it’s how you accomplish telling the story and how you move people. So if you’ve done it with a three-note scale or a 12-note scale, what’s the difference? From a musician’s point of view it’s almost like a carpenter—are different screwdrivers better than others? Not really if we’re talking about different shapes; it’s all about the appropriate tool.

And ill answer for Pebber.
Make an effort, watch the videos and browse the website, it is all there.
Learn them all!

"No chords are more important than each other and all scales are equal?" DUDE - first of all you need to learn some basics of acoustical phenomena, and what an active tone, resting tone and leading tone are and what effect they have on chords and chord qualities before you can even start talking about progressions and tonal gravity.

I highlighted: "Once you learn all the things there are to learn about the theory of music" on that quote :).
